Cover Comparison

Background info:  My magazine is to focus on name designer brands such as Burberry, Chole, Fendi, Gucci, and Loewe. The reason why I choose to do a magazine with the idea of designer brands is that there is no magazine in the market talking about these brands altogether. The magazine that relates to this idea is VOGUE since they see the inner beauty of fashion and its models which something is I will try to convey as well. I want to create a magazine that brings a new overall feel to the fashion genre.

Cover 1: The heading covers the forehead of the model as just by the name VOGUE it makes people want to buy the magazine as VOGUE is known as being one of the most if not the most fashionable magazine. The heading font has serifs which imply that the magazine is a classic and is traditional. However, the sub-fonts used are bold black capitals which suggest that the magazine is also modern as bold block fonts are simple to read and reconsidered modern. Overall the appearance is simple as it only has one picture and small writing along the sides. The cover image is the main focal point of the cover. The model has airbrushed to give a smooth appearance of her skin and actual paper is printed onto a smooth with a slight shine, so the shine of the model’s hair is emphasized. The colors of this cover are subtle and consist mainly of blue, pink, white, and the red of the model’s hair. The colors of her makeup have been reflected in the color choices for the cover.

Cover 2: The masthead is big and bold this is the first thing you notice when you look at the cover. This is the main aim of the masthead. The front cover also has a bright red banner across the masthead telling readers it is the 10th annual shape issue, something that could interest consumers who collect VOGUE. It is bright red to really make it stand out but it also works well with Rihanna’s hair. Each cover line the main parts and words are capital letters to make them stand out and be eye-catching where the rest is in lower case giving the reader a teaser of what the article is about. The cover lines use enticing sentences which VOGUE have cleverly picked out to interest readers. Like every magazine, one of the most important features in the front cover is the barcode and price fond in the bottom left-hand corner. Rihanna is a popular music artist and so having her on the front cover makes the readers interested in the story about her inside. This is something that is important when deciding who to put on your front cover as the right celebrity or model can generate more interest in the magazine and a larger consumer base. The colors used are quite soft and light meaning that the cover lines and plugs really stand out and they are in black or a bold white.

Cover 3: The masthead is in large and stretched tall font. It is in a serif font which shows style and sophistication. The color is in bright red which stands out against the white background. The colors used for writing are red and black. The reading-writing being for the masthead and the main information on the cover. The colors go well together and give off an overall professional look. The color of the model’s clothes and even her lipstick color stand out against the white and the hint of green in the background. The cover image is very big and closes which covers most of the fonts of the magazine. The model is looking straight into the camera which makes you feel more involved and drawn to the magazine. Most of the cover lines around the image flow around the body of the model, whereas some overlap the image where there would be a big empty space otherwise. There is quite a lot of writing on the cover which makes it look busy. The target audience for this magazine is for women who are interested in fashion.
Comparison of 3 covers: The magazine’s colors differ for each color since the colors were chosen mostly by model’s clothes or even setting. The masthead for these covers is consisted expect the Rihanna cover where the letter G is being covered with her head. The Rihanna cover or cover 2 differs the most from the other covers. It has the cover line’s main parts and words are capital letters. Cover 3 has the most writing around the front cover of the magazine. The target audience for the 3 covers is all the same which is mainly women. Cover 2 revolves mostly around the model and follows her posture in the cover to continue its code and conventions. Cover 1 has the most similarities with Cover 3 with the masthead not being covered but cover 2 does not have cover lines all over the place to make it look busy unlike cover 3.
List of codes and conventions: masthead, main image, sell lines, cover lines, target audience, pugs, tags, strapline, and sidebar.
I will keep these in mind while creating my magazine to make sure my magazine could be a real possible seller in the future. A good magazine will need all the codes and conventions to be a successful brand for a consumer base.
